Postdoctoral opportunities are available to study the molecular basis and neural circuitry of sleep regulation in the lab of Dr. William Joiner at the University of California San Diego.
Sleep is essential for human health and well-being. As a result, insufficient sleep is thought to contribute to many disorders. However, the underlying mechanisms and even the needs that sleep fulfills remain among the great mysteries facing neuroscience. Using Drosophila melanogaster, which shares fundamental mechanisms of sleep regulation with mammals, we have developed a novel high-throughput assay to measure sleep need. Using this assay in unique anatomical, genetic, and proteomic screens we have identified both neural circuit components and molecules that contribute to fulfillment of sleep need, and we have implicated some of these in memory formation. We have also identified processes that may co-opt sleep need during pathophysiological conditions. Thus, many interesting projects are available that are relevant to fundamental neuroscience and disease pathology. These projects offer opportunities to develop skills in behavioral genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, optical imaging and electrophysiology. The Joiner lab also studies regulation of mammalian neurotransmitter receptors by a family of evolutionarily conserved endogenous prototoxins.
