Description:   Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Scientist II/III, Lead Expression to join our Biotherapeutics Discovery department located at our Ridgefield, CT facility. As a Scientist II/III, you will a join the Lead Expression team and work on technology programs and portfolio projects aiming to improve BI’s expression platform for novel therapeutic drug candidates.   

Contributes to R&D discovery research by performing scientific research. Implements  protocols as required. Provides expertise within a technical specialty required for skill center productivity.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to R&D discovery research by independently performing scientific research. Implements and modifies protocols as required. 

  • Provides scientific ability and results within a technical specialty required for Biotherapetics Discovery department. 

  • Represents the area of expertise within project teams. Maintains sufficient knowledge of Biotherapeutics process to integrate contributions to projects

  • Performs as an expert in a specialized area in order to introduce and perform technical functions. Requires limited guidance to perform technical protocols.
  • Demonstrates clear understanding of research or development team goals and works effectively toward achieving them; has ability to participate on project teams and contribute to defining expertise-related aspects of program goals.
  • Designs analyses and interprets own experiments with input from project or technical teams. Routinely suggests follow-up experiments.
  • Applies experimental design principles to modify protocols. Performs literature searches and extracts relevant information.
  • Maintains understanding of drug discovery process. Drafts and audits technical reports.
  • Complies with all applicable regulations; Ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; Maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies.
  • Collaborates within Global NBE Biotherapeutics Department to interface with other technologies to ensure efficiency and productivity.
  • Under supervision, plan and execute experiments, interpret the results and propose next steps
  • Present results in group and department meetings

Scientist III Requirements:

  • Masters degree (e.g. MBA, MSc) with a focus in Biology AND/OR 6 years of industry experience in Chemistry AND/OR Biochemistry
  • Requires a sufficient working knowledge of a technology employed in the skill center such as protein engineering, lead generation and associated immunology, protein expression and purification, analytical biophysics of proteins, advanced mass spectrometry to efficiently provide pertinent results with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work within a collaborative team environment and present and defend results to project and technical teams.

Scientist II Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with three plus (3+) years experience in related scientific discipline or Master’s degree from an accredited institution in related scientific discipline or equivalent experience in related field
  • Requires a sufficient working knowledge of a technology employed in the Biotherapeutics Department such as protein engineering, lead generation and associated immunology, protein expression and purification, analytical biophysics of proteins, to efficiently provide pertinent results with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work within a collaborative team environment and present and defend results to project and technical teams.

Desired Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Needs experience or education in one or more of the skills listed above, and the ability to apply those skills to the process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience of mammalian cell culture with ability to implement protein production with minimal supervision.
  • Basic knowledge in molecular and cell biology and/or biotechnology.
  • Previous experience with antibody expression desirable.
  • Experience with automation / automated system is a plus.
  • Apply knowledge of basic theory and scientific principles
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and multi-task.
  • Willingness to take ownership and (under supervision) work on an individual sub-project
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment with independence, ability to troubleshoot
  • Able to draft portions of technical reports
  • Written and verbal communication skills

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
