This position within the Chemistry, Capabilities and Screening group at Merck Research Laboratories will support lead discovery and optimization through X-ray structure determination and interpretation of therapeutically important targets.  The successful candidate will perform crystallization screening, crystal optimization, and structure determination of protein-ligand and antibody complexes and will work in collaboration with medicinal and computational chemists.  The successful candidate will also work closely with molecular biologists and protein biochemists and will have access to cloning, expression, and crystallization technologies as well as a variety of instrumentation for biophysical analyses.

Productive and collaborative interactions with other members of the department, as well as with members of other departments  are required. There is an expectation for periodic travel to other locations. Cooperative and collaborative use of internal and external expertise and established leadership skills will be essential to success.  The position requires active interaction with the external scientific community to continually improve scientific understanding, including presentations at national or international meetings.

  • PhD degree with a minimum of 8 years of experience in structural biology


  • 8+ years of experience in the application of structural biology to drug discovery
  • Demonstrated  ability to design and execute X-ray crystallographic structure determination projects
  • Understanding of biophysical or functional characterization methods and their use to drive structural biology projects.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong publication record  
  • Evidence of leadership in the training and mentoring of team members and project management.
  • Ability to work effectively within timelines.


  • Experience in solving multi-protein complexes or in the use of state-of-the-art  membrane protein structural biology.
  • Protein design and engineering to enable structural studies
  • Expression and purification of  multi-protein complexes and membrane proteins
  • Experience with cryo-EM techniques is a plus.
  • Experience in overseeing the work of other PhD level scientists.
  • Scientific programing / method development for structural biology
