Bioenergy Analysis Postdoctoral Employee - 84558

Organization:  EA-Energy Analysis Env Impacts

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division (EAEI, has an opening for a  Postdoctoral Scholar.  The postdoctoral scholar will work in the Sustainable Energy Systems group in the EAEI Division, Energy Technologies Area. The incumbent will focus on the economic and environmental performance of various bioenergy and bioproduct production processes from municipal solid waste, agricultural residues, other organic wastes, and dedicated lignocellulosic biomass. The position will also entail cost analyses of related technologies, specifically distributed generation and district energy systems. The successful postdoctoral scholar should have a technical background (civil, environmental, or chemical engineering or related field), experience conducting life-cycle assessment and/or techno economic analysis. Some background in modeling bioenergy systems is strongly preferred.  The postdoctoral scholar will be located at the main LBNL site, with occasional visits to the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) satellite location in Emeryville, CA.

What You Will Do:

• Develop and build on under-development life-cycle assessment and technoeconomic models for conversion of organic waste to energy and products, with a specific emphasis on California

• Collaborate with geospatial modelers, chemists, and biologists to integrate empirical results into technoeconomic and life-cycle models, and feed those results to broader scenario analyses

• Proactively engage in discussions with other research groups to identify opportunities for conducting environmental analyses

• Conduct technical potential analyses to understand the magnitude of potential production for different biomass/organic waste resources and end products

• Participate in reporting to funders and present results to key stakeholders

• Facilitate collaborations with academic, government, and industrial entities

• Participate in educational and outreach activities

• Keep and maintain accurate and detailed records of all research performed.

• Develop skills in key software packages and work to build models that link tools together for improved automation

What is Required:

• Ph.D. degree in an engineering or science discipline, ideally related to environmental or chemical engineering

• Experience in conducting technoeconomic analysis/cash flow modeling

• Experience with geospatial modeling tools such as ArcGIS or similar

• Experience with life-cycle environmental assessment

• Some familiarity with software such as SuperPro and AspenPlus

• Background in bioenergy/bio-products research

• Demonstrated competency in carrying out analysis of complex systems relying on diverse datasets

• Proficiency with MS Office and at least one programming language (R, C/C++, Python, FORTRAN, Java)

• Demonstrated publication record or papers from Ph.D. currently under review

• Ability to work independently and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues in a dynamic environment

• Flexible, approachable and able to prioritize and manage multiple cross-functional projects

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on March 5, 2018.

• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA
