Postdoctoral Researcher

Position Description: A postdoctoral position is available in the Wen lab at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans offering the opportunity to study the molecular regulation of Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation and the ecology of oral biofilms. A key etiological agent of human dental caries, S. mutans possesses multiple mechanisms to colonize the tooth surface and become numerically significant under certain conditions leading to dysbiosis of the plaque community and development of carious lesions. The Wen lab uses a systematic approach, which includes various modern molecular and bioinformatics techniques such as Tn-seq, RNA-seq and metabolomics, and both in vivo and in vitro models mimicking the oral cavity, to explore the molecular mechanisms that govern the regulation of S. mutans’ biofilm formation and the interactions between S. mutans and other major species in the cariogenic plaque flora, and to identify novel strategies against dental caries. Currently, two NIH sponsored projects are ongoing in the Wen lab with one on BrpA, a surface associated protein in modulation of S. mutans virulence and the other on eDNA secretion and eDNA-cell interactions in biofilm formation.

Qualifications: Candidates should be highly self-motivated and possess a strong background in microbial genetics, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry. We are particularly interested in individuals who (1) has recently obtained his/her PhD in related field with strong experience with current genetic, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry techniques; (2) possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills; and (3) has the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
