Research Associate I - Liquid Tumor Core

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, or designee, the Research Associate I performs a variety of routine and increasingly complex research experiments.

Essential Functions:

The following are essential job accountabilities:

  • Able to perform routine procedures related to cell culture and molecular biology as assigned including: Trypan Blue counts, RNA and DNA Isolations, Cell Line Passage, Mini-Preps.
  • Prepares / processes / stores / releases blood and tissue specimens according to established protocols.
  • Maintains detailed, accurate records of all work performed
  • Ensures all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with all appropriate safety measures and guidelines in handling, storage, and/or disposal of materials. Washes and cleans laboratory equipment and supplies such as glassware, sinks and tables in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Utilizes Liquid Tumor Bank database to search/identify appropriate specimens for secondary use protocols.
  • Keeps accurate inventory of all specimens in the Liquid Tumor Bank, including accessioning and release of specimens per study protocols. Retrieves tissue from the Liquid Tumor Bank, and updates database to reflect tissue released.
  • Provides basic assistance and information to Principal Investigator(s) for routine service/requests for liquid tumor specimens.
  • Prepares solutions and reagents according to standard formulas and procedures.
  • Maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge for processing various types of specimens.
  • Assists with a variety of research activities as assigned or required.
  • Provides limited training of new employees in day to day procedures.
  • Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings/equipment.

  • May modify protocols
  • Write standard operating procedures and reports.
  • Maintains records of work performed including results and methodology; utilizing records may calculate, graph and compile data.
  • Develops techniques and expertise in one or more areas relevant to laboratory research project.
  • Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of materials.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences

Minimum Experience

  • 0-2 years of research/laboratory experience.
  • Experience with cell culture and molecular biology as assigned including: Trypan Blue counts, RNA and DNA Isolations, Cell Line Passage, Mini-Preps.
