Merck Research Laboratories South San Francisco, a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck and Co., is focused on driving discovery research.  Our new multi-disciplinary discovery research site offers state-of- the-art resources to explore the most promising science combined with Merck’s world-class R&D expertise in small molecules and biologics. Located within the heart of the Bay area’s biomedical community, research conducted in our new laboratories spans exploratory biology through early clinical development and is an integral part of Merck’s powerful world-class network of drug and vaccine discovery. Our ability to excel depends on the integrity, knowledge, imagination, skill, diversity and teamwork of an individual like you.  To this end, we strive to create a fast-paced, nimble and flexible environment of mutual respect, creativity, invention and teamwork.  With access to Merck’s proven global R&D organization, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career. Merck is currently seeking a qualified in vivo imaging scientist within Translational Biomarkers located at our South San Francisco site, where the group focuses on preclinical imaging biomarker development of in-vivo models of human diseases using multi-modality imaging techniques (e.g. Ultrasound, Optical/CT, and MRI)  You will be a part of Translational Biomarkers Department work on discovery and development of novel biomarkers for preclinical studies, early clinical research, and clinical trials across therapeutic areas.  


The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a team using cutting edge optical imaging technologies to develop and validate imaging biomarkers in pre-clinical in-vivo models to interrogate disease biology and support drug discovery.  Experience with a variety of imaging methodologies such as fluorescence & bioluminescent imaging and microCT is required.  Working knowledge of experimental design, executing in vivo studies, and novel fluorescent probe development is essential.  The ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment is expected.


Duties would include and not limited to the following:

  • Responsibility for the discovery and development of novel imaging biomarkers to support drug discovery and development
  • Coordination and execution of imaging studies to meet a demanding Discovery program schedule
  • Maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment used for imaging experiments
  • Accurate record keeping for notebooks, equipment logs and research reports
  • Presentation of research results to discovery, pre-clinical and clinical teams, including writing of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals
  • Collaboration with Imaging Department personnel, Discovery Biology program teams, and clinical scientists, as well as external research institutes or CROs.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • PhD degree inBiomedical Sciences with 0+ year of experience; or MS degree in BiomedicalSciences with minimum of 4 years of experience in industry or academia


Required Experience:

  • Minimum of (3) years hands-on experience with in-vivo imaging experiment and data analysis
  • Relevant research experience in fluorescent and bioluminescent imaging
  • Ability to learn drug research and disease biology and develop appropriate imaging biomarker solutions to overcome challenges associated with drug discovery and development

Preferred Experience:

  • Design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel fluorescent & bioluminescent probes
  • Strong academic record including publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills necessary for working in a highly collaborative, cross-functional working environment
  • Ability to work independently
