Position in Faculty of Medicine - Department of Biochemistry

The Canada Research Chair is also open to internal candidates who already hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at McGill University.

Position description

McGill University’s Department of Biochemistry seeks to recruit two (2) outstanding researchers as tenure-track faculty members at the Assistant Professor level. The Department of Biochemistry seeks to strengthen its expertise in biological sciences including – but not restricted to – computational biology, RNA biology, single molecule imaging, enzymology, and protein engineering.

The Department of Biochemistry (http://www.mcgill.ca/biochemistry/department-biochemistry) is located at the heart of the University’s Life Science Complex, where over 200 biomedical researchers form a dynamic and highly collaborative research community. Research in the Department of Biochemistry is multidisciplinary, with specializations including the regulation of gene expression, protein structure and function, signal transduction within pathways critical to human health and disease, and many other areas central to biological sciences. Faculty members also benefit from spectacular laboratory space and state-of-the-art facilities with access to many modern core facilities.

McGill University is located in central Montréal, which is one of North America's most culturally diverse and lively cities, offering a high quality of life with affordable housing. McGill, the Department and the city of Montréal attract highly motivated, top students.

Successful applicants will be provided with competitive startup packages to help establish and carry out independently funded research programs.

If the successful candidate satisfies the specific eligibility conditions of the program, the candidate may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Biomedical Research which provides protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment.

Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging researchers (individuals who are no more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree). However, career interruptions (e.g. maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, family care, etc.) may be taken into consideration using the Tier 2 justification process to review the candidate’s eligibility. Potential applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree with career interruptions may contact the institution to have their eligibility reviewed through the Tier 2 justification process. The eligibility conditions for the CRC chairs are described at http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/nomination-mise_en_candidature-eng.aspx#s3.

Job Duties

Successful applicants will be expected to establish and carry out independently funded research programs, which include training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. In addition to its research activities, the Department of Biochemistry plays an important role in undergraduate and medical education, so successful applicants will also be expected to teach at these levels. The selected candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e: teaching, supervision of graduate students and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education requirements

Applicants should hold a Ph.D degree (or equivalent qualification) in biological or computer science, or in a related field, and have at least two (2) years postdoctoral research training. There is a strong collegial and support role within the department, so collaborative experience is an asset. Functional knowledge of French, although not essential, will also be considered an asset. Candidates who do not satisfy the CRC eligibility criteria for a Tier 2 chair are nonetheless invited to apply for the position.
