By joining the Neuroscience department at Merck, you will engage in exciting drug discovery research targeting the treatment of pain and cognitive disorders.  Working in synergy with all disciplines within R&D, you will contribute to the definition of novel and innovative strategies, targeting discovery of new treatments in the fields of neuropathic pain, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and schizophrenia.  As a motivated and technically skilled in vitro scientist, you will work as part of a high profile team to apply molecular biology and histology techniques to identify, validate, and progress innovative novel drug targets.  You will work independently, but will be expected to proactively collaborate with colleagues across disciplines.  

Primary responsibilities include the design and implementation of in vitro experiments for target identification and validation including establishing in vitro model systems.  The position will also require the ability to study the scientific literature, develop new technical expertise, and be an active participant in scientific dialogue in project meetings and internal/external scientific meetings.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, optimize, and implement in vitro and tissue-based assays to validate novel targets and neuroimmunology mechanisms. If needed, perform standard biochemical, cellular and molecular techniques and assist in tissue preparation and extraction from preclinical animal models.
  • Generate reliable and reproducible data in a timely manner.
  • Interpret results and draw conclusions from own multistage experiments and suggest, design and pursue relevant experiments that further project goals. 
  • Understand relevant scientific literature and apply theoretical framework to solving problems.
  • Independently schedule and prioritize workload to manage several tasks simultaneously and identify / utilize resources outside of own group.
  • Efficiently organize and present scientific plans and data at project team meetings.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary research team.



  • A PhD  Degree in Neuroscience, Immunology, or  related field , OR a Master's Degree in Neuroscience, Immunology, or a related field with a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the area of neuroimmunology discovery , OR a Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience, Immunology, or related field with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the area of neuroimmunology discovery.

  • Design, optimization, and implementation of molecular biology and biochemistry experiments in tissue homogenate.
  • Design, optimization, and implementation of histology techinques on tissue slices
  • Experience with molecular biology assays such as TaqMan, RNAScope, Western blot, ELISA, etc.
  • Immunohistochemistry and/or immunofluorescence staining experience including sectioning of frozen tissue for experiments.
  • Ability to independently design, execute and interpret critical experiments. 
  • Proven track record of generating publication quality data and contributing to manuscript or patent preparation. 
  • Experience in studying neuroimmune communication in both the central and peripheral nervous systems.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills and keen ability to engage internal and external team members in collaborative research.
  • Ability to learn quickly on the job through mentoring and action.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful with good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to independently manage workflow to see projects through from start to completion.


  • Demonstrated experience in immunology as relates to inflammation, pain, and neurodegeneration.
  • Small animal handling and tissue preparation for further evaluation.
