Recent studiessuggest that excessive peripheral insulin action may exacerbatecardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes. This may be mediated inpart by its ability to modulate lipid metabolism. More recently, it has beendemonstrated that blocking the counter- regulatory hormone glucagon canrobustly lower blood glucose levels without substantial risk of hypoglycemiain preclinical and clinical studies. However, these positive effects onglucose were accompanied by an increase in circulating lipid levels. Themolecular and cellular mechanisms that directly link insulin and glucagonaction to lipid metabolism have been underexplored.
The intern willexplore one or more novel mechanisms by which the dyslipidemia associatedwith these blood glucose lowering agents may be reduced. Understanding thesemechanisms will help to design better therapies, or to enhance existingapproaches, used to treat diabetes and lower associated risks of diabeticcomplications. The intern will work as part of a team employing a variety of in vivo and ex vivo approaches using preclinical dysmetabolic models. Basiclab skills and knowledge in biochemistry, physiology, or molecular biology isrequired.
