Professor of Neurochemistry

The professorship in neurochemistry will be placed at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysiscs (DBB). Neurochemistry with molecular neurobiology is one predominant area in research and educational at the department. Several research groups focus on molecular aspects of neurodegenerative mechanisms, studies of ion channels, neurotoxins, cellular differentiation, intra- and extracellular signal transduction and the blood-brain-barrier. A wide spectrum of analytical methods including biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational chemistry, biophysics and molecular biology are used and developed at the department. Other facilities at DBB include cell culture, MST, NMR, techniques for studying protein folding, comparative genomics crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, confocal microscopy and quantitative image analysis.

The environment for research and education within the subject neurochemistry with molecular neorobiology at Stockholm University also includes scientists at the Department of Molecular Biosciences - The Wenner-Gren Institute and the Department of Zoology. Several research groups the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics are located at Science for Life Laboratory. This is a national facility providing access to advanced methods for large-scale studies of nerve cell development, e.g. via single-cell sequencing and advanced imaging techniques. In addition the proximity to neuroscience departments at Karolinska Institutet, provides ample opportunities for fruitful collaborations. Furthermore, major investments have been and are being made at Stockholm University to create new infrastructures of relevance for neuroscience: a state-of-the-art animal facility with unique opportunities for integrated intravital microscopy, a cryo-EM microscope and the Stockholm University Brain Imaging Centre, an advanced interdisciplinary infrastructure for non-clinical research on brain function and structure.

Qualification requirements
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching skills is qualified for employment as a professor. In order to be appointed as a professor, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Well-documented research skills at a high international level
  • Well-documented teaching skills
  • Strong skills in developing and leading research activities and staff

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria 
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills, followed in importance by teaching skills. Some attention will also be given to administrative skills, the ability to develop and lead research activities and staff, and the ability to collaborate with the community and convey information about research and development.

The assessment of research skills will focus primarily on merits within the subject area of the position.

Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education is an advantage. An applicant who has not completed at least 15 credits of teaching and learning in higher education and is not considered to have otherwise acquired the corresponding knowledge should undergo such training within the first two years of employment

Education within neurochemistry with molecular neurobiology is mainly at the master level, in English. However, the language of instruction in first-cycle courses and programmes is Swedish. If the successful candidate does not speak Swedish at the time of appointment, he/she is expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of employment.
