Food from Thought Data Science Faculty

The University of Guelph is seeking four outstanding tenure-track faculty members with expertise in areas of data science and agri-food to join the University’s Food from Thought: Agricultural Systems for a Healthy Planet research group, supported by a $76.7 million grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund.

As a key member of the Food from Thought research team, you will hold a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in one of the following areas and academic departments:

The Food from Thought program intends to exponentially increase our ability to leverage big data for the benefit of food production and biodiversity at global, landscape and micro scales of research and innovation. The program will integrate and strengthen the University’s data management and analysis capabilities across our facilities and our partners, and better support and incubate faculty and student innovations. At the same time, we want to increase the capacity, sustainability and safety of food production systems without undermining environmental health, ecosystem services or livestock health and welfare.

For the duration of the Food from Thought grant (to 2024), the four faculty members will be directly involved in grant-supported research and establishing an integrated research and innovation platform for accessing and applying big data in the agriculture and agri-food sector.  The goal is to give scientists, producers, entrepreneurs, and policy makers the data and tools to unleash the next wave of agriculture and agri-food innovation by exploiting the unique potential offered by big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning to develop new approaches, products, technologies and policies to vault the sector forward.

A strong record of research accomplishments and demonstrated abilities in teaching and graduate advising are important; as are expertise that can directly support the expansion and enhancement of the University’s capacity in areas of data science, including big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning. The skills to build connections with other institutions and stakeholders within agricultural and food systems are essential.
