The successful candidate will join the Merck Vaccine Analytical Development team and will be responsible for overseeing analytical development for one or more vaccine programs. In this role, the candidate will be responsible for developing appropriate analytical control strategies, establishing specifications and coordinating analytical support across all phases of clinical development. The successful candidate will also lead a team responsible for developing immunoassays used for vaccine product release and stability testing.

The successful candidate will have experience with immunoassay design, method transfer and qualification/validation.  The succesfful candidate will also have experience leading CMC (chemistry and manufacturing control) and regulatory activities for vaccine or biological products

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing immunoassay method development, including critical reagent generation/selection, method optimization, robustness testing and performance evaluation.
  • Supervising a group of 3-8 scientists
  • Participating in product development team meetings
  • Driving analytical strategy decisions and implementing analytical development plans
  • Coordinating analytical support for all aspects of vaccine process and formulation development.



  • A PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related field, with a minimum of eight (8) years of industry experience, OR a Master's Degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related field with a minimum of ten (10) years of industry experience.


  • A minimum of five (5) years in the area of vaccines or biologics.
  • Experience supervising and developing teams of 3 or more scientists.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams.
  • Experience authoring regulatory documents including INDs, BLAs or other filings.
  • Experience developing immunoassays used for product release or clinical testing.
  • GMP or GLP experience.



  • Experience with quality by design tools including DOEs (design of experiments).
  • Experience evaluating and implementing novel technologies.
