Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare. The Safety Industrial Hygiene (IH) Specialist is responsible for managing IH, Ergonomics (Ergo), Hazard Communication (HazCom), and Chemical Management programs for the site. Primary function is to prepare and keep the site compliant with OSHA, Merck standards and to develop S&E procedures and processes to help the site to be in compliance.
The Safety Industrial Hygiene (IH) Specialist must be familiar with existing regulations and is leading the implementation of the required changes.
The incumbent will be required to work closely with people in other sections of the department, the Plant, and in some cases, the central groups (Center of Excellence (COE), Engineering, Manufacturing, Technical Operations and Process Engineering). He/she must have good interpersonal skills which will be utilized in communicating with local, state and federal regulatory agencies. Under the direction of the Safety &Environmental director, he/she is responsible for several elements of the plant’s S&E regulatory compliance program.
Primary Activities Include:  Lead and be the subject matter expert (SME) of the IH Program (including chemical exposure, noise, light, vibration, ventilation, asbestos) at the Danville, PA site: 
  • Develop and coordinate the execution of the site’s IH Program, including site processes to anticipate, recognize, and evaluate workplace health hazards and recommend proper control strategies to manage identified risks; 
  • Prioritize IH-related risks and develop and assist with implementing corrective action and preventive action plans. Monitor and communicate overall status of the Program to Site Management; 
  • Proactively identify improvement opportunities and collaborate with other IH’s, EHS staff, Engineering, and Operations personnel to leverage best practices and drive continuous improvement efforts; 
  • Coordinate the IH Monitoring team efforts in execution of the site’s exposure monitoring programs (must be capable to collect samples him/her self) 
  • Maintain the required technical competencies, proficiencies, and regulatory knowledge to ensure responsibilities are effectively executed;
  • Establish and maintain excellent communication and training processes to ensure on site and above site management, occupational health, and affected employees understand the workplace hazards, exposures, and accompanying risks, as well as the needed control strategies; 
  • Provide technical support for new projects and modifications to ensure proper IH design review, containment verification, and sustainability of the solutions implemented. 
  • Responsible for the IH lab and all lab equipment (use, maintain, calibrate, purchase) in accordance and respect to departmental budget limits. 
Lead and be the subject matter expert (SME) of the Ergonomic Program (including operation areas and offices) 

  • Develop and coordinate the execution of the site’s Annual Ergonomic Assessment Program. 
  • Perform ergonomic risk assessments and assign risk priority scores. 
  • Implement Feasible Engineering Controls with appropriate supports. 
Lead and be the subject matter expert (SME) of the Chemical Management Program 

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and Merck requirements regarding the chemicals present on site. 
  • Manage the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) database. 
Lead and be the subject matter expert (SME) of the Hazard Communication Program 

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and Merck requirement regarding HazCom and labeling requirements. 
  • Create and provide General Hazard Communication training site-wide. 
Lead and be the subject matter expert (SME) of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Program 

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and Merck requirements regarding PPE 
  • Approve and certify personal protective equipment for specific job tasks. 
  • Provide training to all site employees regarding correct selection and use of PPE. 
Lead for S&E department in coordination with the site subsystem owner Biosafety management program. 

  • Support the site program regarding Biosafety for the S&E department. 
  • Biosafety officer for the site (current scope: Quality labs and health services). 
Support to Operations: Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned as be S&E advisor for additional GSE Standards (as for example medical surveillance), be part of site trainer team during site training weeks.  


Education Minimum Requirement:
  • Bachelors' Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, biochemistry or other related discipline.
Required Experience and Skills: 

  • At least 5 years’ professional EHS or Industrial Hygiene experience
  • Must be a Certified Industrial Hygienist or have minimum of 3 years in an Industrial Hygiene related role
  • Sound knowledge of EHS legislation and standards. 
  • Technical expertise including, but not limited to: exposure assessment & monitoring of pharmaceutical operations; control strategies – prevention, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) including respiratory protection, applicable regulatory and SDS requirements. 
  • Knowledge of Ergonomics in the workplace. 
  • Good written, oral communication & interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem solving ability. 
  • Self-directed & demonstrated efficient work methods, problem solving skills & ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. 
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite of programs.
Preferred Experience and Skills: 

  • Professional experience within a pharmaceutical environment (primary manufacturing)
  • Green Belt certification
  • Auditor skills. 
  • Computer Skills: Humantech, and Schemis database. 
  • Customer Focus: Team Building; compliance mindset.
