Assistant Professor Food Animal Microbiome

The Department of Animal Science is seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position that has 75% research and 25% teaching responsibilities that relate to the food animal microbiome. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an externally funded, innovative research program. The microbiome affects host physiology and provides opportunities to improve mammalian or avian production efficiency and health. In addition, animal production practices can affect the host microbiome (use of antibiotics, prebiotics, probiotics) that could have wide-ranging effects on production efficiency and development of antibiotic resistance. Possible areas of research focus include the impact of production practices, nutrition and/or the environment on microbial communities that are relevant to mammalian or avian growth, lactation, health, reproductive biology, and immune function and the mechanisms of host-microbe interactions. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate as appropriate with personnel across the College of Agricultural Sciences and the Department of Animal Science, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Bioinformatics and Genomics, the Genome Sciences Institute and the Huck Institutes of Life Sciences. Penn State has excellent core facilities including those in Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Mass Spectrometry, and Metabolomics. Teaching responsibilities will include an advanced undergraduate course (in areas possibly including immunology/biosecurity, animal health, farm to food microbiology) and the development of a graduate course relevant to the food animal microbiome. The successful applicant will be involved in advising undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in Animal Science or another relevant discipline, and 2-3 years of postdoctoral training with publications on microbiomes is preferred. Interest in development of approaches to modify the microbiome or microbial products through nutrition or management to improve animal health, production efficiency or sustainability is required. Utilization of modern approaches including metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, or metabolomics, as well as comparative approaches across species is encouraged. Candidates must possess excellent research, teaching, and grant writing skills, and demonstrate positive interpersonal relations and effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with colleagues at Penn State and externally. Experience working with diverse audiences is desirable. Salary is competitive, commensurate with background and experience. An attractive benefits package is available. Applicants should upload a letter of application, resume, academic transcripts, a brief statement of extension and research interests, and the name, address, telephone number and email address of at least three references. Inquiries may be directed to Dr. Joy Pate mailto:(jlp36@psu.edu), chairperson of the search committee. Review of applications will begin on March 1, 2018 and continue until a suitable candidate is identified.
