Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurodegenerative Disease Mechanisms

Job Description: A NIH funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Benjamin Wolozin to study the role of RNA binding proteins, RNA metabolism and RNA granules in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. The postdoctoral fellow will investigate how these processes are regulated, and how dysfunction contributes to disease. The studies will use phase separation biology, cell biology, imaging, optogenetics, proteomics, systems biology and RNAseq. The studies will take advantage of our finding that reducing the RNA binding protein TIA1 delays progression in a mouse model of tauopathy (Apicco, et al, Nature Neuro., 21(1):72-80, PMID: 29273772.

They will characterize the interactions between proteins and RNA, in the context of interaction networks of RNA granules and pathological complexes (e.g., tau, TDP-43, C9orf72). The goal will be to understand how the complexes change with disease, identify which are the crucial modulators of each type of complex, and identify methods of intervention to normalize the disease-related changes of these complexes.

About the employer: The laboratory is well funded and positions are available immediately. Boston University School of Medicine is located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant biotechnology communities. There are a wide range of active collaborations and opportunities for interactions with the many other institutions in the Boston area, including other universities, pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology companies. The laboratory is a moderate sized lab (~10 people), with 2200 square feet of space, with all necessary resources.
