Position Title: Postdoctoral Position, Microbiology
Position Description: A post-doctoral scientist position is available offering an opportunity to study bacteria that have significant antimicrobial resistance. In particular, carbapenemase-producing organisms have become a worldwide threat and understanding the mechanisms of spread of these resistant bacteria is very important to stop preventable deaths, especially given the number of vulnerable patients receiving complex medical care today. We have previously completed extensive genomic and epidemiological analysis of these organisms in patients and the environment and noted differences in species, plasmid diversity, and susceptibility profiles, but with particular similarities in plasmid backbones. We are now extending this work. We use a combination of traditional microbiology, molecular biology, and next generation sequencing/bioinformatics to study bacterial pathogens, with a focus on clinical isolates of epidemiologic significance.
Our group is located within the Microbiology Service, Department of Laboratory Medicine, NIH Clinical Center on the main Bethesda NIH campus.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics, or related discipline.
- Prior experience in microbiology.
- Ability to conduct research independently and work collaboratively with other scientists required.
