Director of the University of South Carolina Cardiovascular Translational Research Center
The University of South Carolina is expanding its efforts in Health Sciences education and research particularly in areas that significantly impact its state residents. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and is a prominent health concern in South Carolina. Thus, cardiovascular disease is a major research focus at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine (SOM). The Cardiovascular Translational Research Center (CTRC) has been established to promote integrated research into the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. A search for an established investigator to serve as Director of the CTRC and as Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy has been initiated at the SOM. The successful candidate will be an established federally funded scientist (PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) with a strong background in cardiovascular research, demonstrable experience in successfully leading programmatic, multidisciplinary research teams, and strong existing ties with cardiovascular physicians and surgeons. A key component of this position is to foster new research collaborations between physicians and CTRC members.
The University of South Carolina is the only comprehensive research institution in South Carolina housing its own medical, law, business, public health, and engineering schools, as well as academic disciplines typically found at undergraduate institutions. The SOM has strong collaborative ties with the USC Colleges of Engineering and Computing (Biomedical Engineering), Arnold School of Public Health (Epidemiology, Exercise Science, Environmental Health), Arts and Sciences (Cardiovascular Biology), and Pharmacy (Drug Discovery). The SOM, in partnership with the Palmetto Health System and the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center, has a vibrant cardiovascular surgical program and a newly established Cardiology Fellowship Program. Facilitating these collaborations, the SOM houses state-of-the-art whole animal imaging and surgical facilities, and a core Instrumentation Research Facility specializing in microscopy and imaging at all levels, from light to electron microscopy, fluorescent and confocal microscopy. The successful candidate will expand the integration of the CTRC with diverse units across the university campus.
Applicants should submit their application including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research plan and contact information of at least three references as a single pdf electronically to CVCBAsearch@uscmed.sc.edu. The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
