The Department of Neuroscience is seeking postdoctoral fellowship applicants to be a part of an interdisciplinary team of biologists, geneticists and chemists within Merck Research Laboratories.  Projects will seek to develop mass spectrometry-based biomarker assays supporting neurodegenerative disease drug discovery programs. Postdoctoral fellows will have the opportunity to leverage genomic and transcriptomic findings to drive discovery and targeted proteomic studies to identify and validate biomarkers relating disease state through the use of cell-based models and patient tissues and fluids. Candidates should have a strong background in the identification and quantification of proteins in complex biological matrices using advanced LC-MS-based analytical technologies and will have the opportunity to develop additional neuroscience expertise through collaborative efforts with disease area specialists. This fellowship is a unique opportunity to learn about the process of drug discovery while contributing to the advancement Merck's drug development pipeline.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Working with disease area collaborators in the planning and execution of LC-MS-based biomarker identification studies
  • Developing novel sample preparation approaches, and discovery proteomic and targeted LC-MS-based assays in various matrices
  • Analysis and interpretation of LC-MS data
  • Follow-up biomarker validation through the development of clinically translatable, targeted LC-MS/MS-based quantitative assays
  • Communication of findings at project teams and external conferences as well as through peer-reviewed publications

Education Minimum Requirement:
  • PhD with less than 3 years of Postdoctoral Experience or achieved a  Ph.D. by Spring/Summer of  2018
Required Experience and Skills:
  •  Quantitative proteomics (i.e. label-free, SILAC, TMT labeling) or targeted analyte quantification via multiple/parallel reaction monitoring
    • Nano-liquid chromatography
    • Proficiency using LC-MS-compatible sample preparation methods (i.e. immunoaffinity enrichment, SPE/LLE)
Must be an independent scientist with an ability to excel in a team environment
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Familiarity with Skyline targeted mass spectrometry workflows
  • Background in Neuroscience and interest in movement disorders and neurodegenerative diseases
