Position Overview: 
As a postdoctoral fellow in the MRL Chemical Engineering Research and Development Department based in Rahway, NJ, you will collaborate closely with a highly motivated cross-functional team of engineers and chemists to design, develop, and characterize continuous crystallization processes for the isolation of drug substance compounds.  Through experimental design and process modeling, you will develop new technologies and methodologies that are capable of producing crystals with desired physical properties, in some cases, generating tailored attributes not accessibly through batch processing.  This work will advance the field of continuous processing in the pharmaceutical industry as well as enhance the understanding of crystallization process development. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Designing, developing and performing batch and continuous crystallization experiments and characterizing these processes through a variety of in-line and off-line analytical tools.
  • Establishing an appropriate control strategy and optimizing crystallizations to achieve product with desired form, habit, and particle size distribution.  Techniques are expected to include evaluation of active control via feedback control and/or model-predictive control approaches.
  • Developing robust crystallization process models to understand and characterize the variables that impact crystal attributes.
  • Establishing an overarching strategy for design and scale up of robust continuous crystallization, with a focus toward start-up and shut-down procedures.  Multiple potential designs will be interrogated, including novel approaches to integrate crystallization with wetmilling to maximize the opportunity for tuning of product attributes.


Education Minimum Requirement:  
  •  PhD with less than 3 years of Postdoctoral Experience or achieved a  Ph.d by Spring/Summer of  2018 
Required Experience and Skills:
  • Working knowledge of key crystallization concepts such as supersaturation, growth and nucleation kinetics, and kinetic and thermodynamic driving forces.  
  • Demonstrated ability to develop well-controlled crystallization processes through antisolvent addition and/or temperature.  
  • Laboratory hands-on experience.
  • Data interpretation, manuscript preparation, publication and presentation of results.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Proficient in process modeling software such as Matlab, gPROMs, or similar software.
  • Familiarity with a variety of process analytical tools, including focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), infrared (IR), and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • Familiarity with particle engineering technology and concepts, such as wet milling.
  • Experience with continuous process technology and concepts.matter the most in their lives.
