Potsdam University of Applied Sciences (FHP) is an innovative, forward-looking and practically oriented university. W3 Professorship in Historic Building Conservation Design


Successor to Professor Dr. Martina Abri

The professorship in Historic Building Conservation Design occupies a key position in the focal area of Urban Architecture that is incorporated into every area of teaching. Alongside in-depth knowledge of the conservation discourse in both theoretical and practical terms, the candidate will be expected to take an original position on aspects of the concept of monuments and their impact on architectural and conservation design.


The ubject comprises the independent teaching of planning and design, the teaching of architectural surveying, lectures on monument preservation, its history, theory and methods for students on the Architecture & Urban Design programmes plus conservation and restoration as well as close cooperation with the teaching and research areas of architectural history and theory plus restoration that are enshrined in the same module.


Candidates should be committed and enthusiastic personalities able to offer holistic, proficient teaching and be distinguished by their own body of work with specific, demonstrable architectural achievements in the field of conservation design / building renovation and who will take a prominent role in the specialist discourse within the programme and department.


As a key professorship (W3) the core tasks include the significant and profile-shaping development of the programme and department in terms of teaching (theory in combination with design theory) and research, the development of an independent research profile, the acquisition of third-party funding, commitment to continuing education, the expansion of interdisciplinary and international contacts and involvement in course and university self-governance.


The subject area is integrated within the Bachelor's and Master's programmes. The post holder will be expected to deliver classes that are interdisciplinary and/or oriented towards the didactic principle of research-based learning. Pedagogic and didactic skills and teaching experience are required, as well as a strong presence on site.


The Faculty endeavours to test and develop new didactic concepts. Participation in interdisciplinary, cross-departmental courses that are oriented towards the didactic principle of research-based learning and the delivery of English-language and online-supported courses are also required. Courses are generally delivered in the German language.


The conditions of employment are commensurate with § 41 of the Brandenburg Universities Act (BbgHG). Alongside a university degree and teaching proficiency, candidates will be expected to demonstrate a particular aptitude for scientific work, generally evidenced by a qualifying doctorate, plus specific achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods over the course of at least three years of professional practice, of which at least two years must have been outside of the academic sphere.


In the event that this is a first appointment to a professorship, the contractual relationship shall initially be limited to five years in accordance with § 43 para. 1 of the BbgHG and § 35 of the articles of appointment of Potsdam University of Applied Sciences. Shortly before the end of this period an assessment shall be carried out to determine if the employment relationship may be extended without the post being re-advertised.
