Both the grade for the master's thesis and the weighed average grade of the master's degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade. Candidates graduated from institutions with other grade systems than A-F should include a documented conversion scale with their application. Potential candidates should document very good methodological qualifications, preferably in both qualitative and quantitative methods.

In evaluating the applicants, emphasis will be placed on their potential for research in the field. The appointee must be able to work independently and as a member of a team, be creative and innovative. The resulting PhD degree will qualify for research and teaching positions at University level.

All parts of the recruitment process will be in English, and the PhD scholar must have a very good command of both oral and written English.

The candidature will mainly be carried out at the University of Stavanger, apart from a period of study abroad at a recognized and relevant centre of research, subject to agreement between the candidate and the university during the course of the scholarship.
