Essential hypertension consists in a high and persistent systemic arteria! blood pressure and, actually, it is the most prevalent risk factor associateci with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Melatonin is a highly efficient scavenger of reactive oxygen species and it also exhibits beneficiai anti­ inflammatory and cardiomodulator effects. During this research project patients affected by essential hypertension will be treated with melatonin (1mg/die} far 1 year and compared to untreated patients with the aim to evaluate the anti-hypertensive, antioxidant and vaso-/cardio-protective melatonin effects and so contribute to implement the anti-hypertensive therapy.
