Melatonin and Essentional Hypertension (MEH)
Essential hypertension consists in a high and persistent systemic arteria! blood pressure and, actually, it is the most prevalent risk factor associateci with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
Melatonin is a highly efficient scavenger of reactive oxygen species and it also exhibits beneficiai anti inflammatory and cardiomodulator effects. During this research project patients affected by essential hypertension will be treated with melatonin (1mg/die} far 1 year and compared to untreated patients with the aim to evaluate the anti-hypertensive, antioxidant and vaso-/cardio-protective melatonin effects and so contribute to implement the anti-hypertensive therapy.
