 Safety Assessment and LaboratoryAnimals Resources (SALAR) helps advance high quality drug candidates intodevelopment by defining the non–clinical safety and selectivity of leadcompounds. SALAR employees evaluate Lead Op candidates and preclinical toxicityof drug development candidates, provide mechanistic understanding ofdrug-induced toxicity, and assess implications for human safety.  SALAR provides collaborative research inanimal model development, veterinary medical and animal care, and researchfacility management. Safety Assessment also responds to regulatory questions insupport of drug registration. 

 Intern project summary: The intern will become familiarwith regulatory guidance governing the toxicological characterization ofpharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical excipients, will have GLP trainingappropriate for a Study Director, and will collaborate with experiencedtoxicologists to conduct a repeat-dose toxicity study for a pharmaceuticalexcipient. The intern will learn about required study design elements, implementa study protocol, monitor study progress, and evaluate and report studyresults.  The intern will become familiarwith certain operational aspects of the organization and meet with scientistshaving different areas of expertise within the nonclinical safety assessmentgroup.


  • Required: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a MS/PhD program, or in pursuit of a BS/MS, in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Animal Science, Biology, or other relevant discipline
  • Candidates must be returning to school in the Fall of 2018.
  • RequiredExperience:

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for 9-12 weeks beginning in May or June of 2018
  • PreferredExperience:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • In-vivo laboratory experience
  • Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills
