How will you invent the future?


As a Data Science Senior Specialist at Merck’s Austin IT HUB, you will be part of inventing tomorrow. Our Innovative centers are where great people come together and deliver solutions that save and improve lives.


You will:

  • Help design and develop innovative quantitative approaches and enable decision making across all business divisions of Merck to influence key programs/projects including those for predictive modeling and mining.
You will also be responsible to:

  • Demonstrate deep understanding of customers’ or stakeholders’ needs, requirements and expectations.
  • Build and share in-depth domain knowledge of research and trends in one or more sub-specialty areas of data analytics with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Design and guide development of applications, platforms and business processes to derive value through scientific analytics.
  • Lead a team of data scientists in successful completion of project deliverables.
  • Help train data sciences staff in use of appropriate data sciences analytics and applications software.
  • Incorporate company vision, goals and direction in strategy development; and exercises judgment in solving problems within standard procedures and practices.
  • Stay abreast of current industry best practices.

You will work and learn more about:

  • Pharmaceutical business
  • Data Analytics
  • Development in various languages including R, SAS, MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, or equivalent


  • PhD, or a Master's degree.


  • A minimum of five years of experience, in Data Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Sciences, or Engineering.
  • Ability to independently design and execute complex quantitative projects by developing hypotheses and analytical strategies.
  • Able to present to key business stakeholders with findings/conclusions using business terms and data visualization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to share results and conclusions to technical and non-technical audience.
  • Highly knowledgeable in use of one of more of standard analytical software such as R, SAS, MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, and database querying languages.

  • Aware of applications, platforms and business processes relevant to scientific analytics.
  • Works with fellow data scientist team members to collectively and successfully complete tasks towards project deliverables.
  • Hands-on experience in big data analytics, data mining, NLP (Natural Language Processing), or Hadoop is a plus.
