As part of Merck’s Future Talent Program, the Pharmacology department in Merck Research Laboratories (MRL), West Point site invites applications for an intern position during the summer of 2018.




The Pharmacology Infectious Diseases support team is looking for an exceptionally talented and motivated student. Working alongside experienced pharmaceutical industry scientists, the successful candidate will contribute to the discovery of novel anti-infective drugs.   The primary responsibilities of the group are to design, develop, and execute in vitro assays to evaluate and characterize drug candidates from antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and/or vaccine development programs.  This opportunity provides hands-on experience in a fast-paced drug discovery environment and a chance to see if we are the right company for your long-term goals.




The successful candidate will:




  • Execute in vitro assays to assess inhibition of bacterial growth by small molecules utilizing a range of state of the art technology platforms and laboratory automation

  • Work with industry-standard data analysis tools and record keeping, including electronic lab books

  • Communicate data progress at internal meetings; give a verbal presentation at the completion of training; participate in scientific exchange with Merck scientists


The position will be located at Merck Research Laboratories in West Point, Pennsylvania.

Qualifications


Education:

  • Required: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a full-time BS/BA degree program in microbiology, bacteriology, biology, biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline

  • Candidates must be returning to school in the Fall of 2018.

  • Candidates must have completed at least (2) college-level courses in biology by May 30, 2018.

  • Required Experience:



  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for 9-12 weeks beginning in May or June of 2018

  • Candidates must possess superior verbal and written communication skills.

  • Candidates must have a demonstrated record of strong academic achievement, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • Candidates must be able to work independently in a multi-functional, team-oriented environment.

  • Preferred Experience:



  • A background in microbiology or bacteriology.

  • Previous laboratory experience.

  • Prior experience in molecular biology.

  • Self-motivated and highly organized.

  • A letter of reference from a professor is highly recommended; you may attach it in the same section of the profile as your resume when applying online.
