 Safety Assessment and LaboratoryAnimals Resources (SALAR) helps advance high quality drug candidates intodevelopment by defining the non–clinical safety and selectivity of leadcompounds. SALAR employees evaluate Lead Op candidates and preclinical toxicityof drug development candidates, provide mechanistic understanding ofdrug-induced toxicity, and assess implications for human safety.  SALAR provides collaborative research inanimal model development, veterinary medical and animal care, and researchfacility management. Safety Assessment also responds to regulatory questions insupport of drug registration. 

 Working with a team of scientistsin the Investigative laboratory Sciences department, the intern will help todevelop in vitro safety models to predict adverse events involving the immunesystem.  Multiple pre-clinical species,including mice and non-human primates, will be examined.  The project will include designing in vitromodels, isolating and culturing immune system cells, assessing results usingstate of the art techniques (flow cytometry, ELISA, etc.), and analyzingresults for presentations to team members. The overall experience will help teach the intern multiple laboratoryand critical thinking skills.  Inaddition, emphasis will be placed on how these skills fit into the overall drugdevelopment process.  Finally, internsare expected to prepare and present a final report on their training andresearch experience.


  • Required: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a minimum of a BS/BA in Biology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Pharmacology, or a relevant discipline.
  • Candidates must be returning to school in the Fall of 2018.
  • RequiredExperience:

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for 9-12 weeks beginning in May or June of 2018
  • PreferredExperience:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • In-vitro laboratory experience including cell culture experience
  • Basic knowledge of immunology
