and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of

between potential and achievement lies in the spark that fuels innovation and
inventiveness; this is the space where Merck has codified its legacy for
over a century. Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward
momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global
healthcare.

Merck is on a quest for cures and is committed to being the world’s premier,

world-class small molecule and biologics R&D expertise to create
breakthrough science that radically changes the way we approach serious
diseases.

The Future Talent Program
features internships that last 9-12 weeks and will include one or more
projects. These opportunities in our Merck Research Labs (MRL) can provide you
with great development and a chance to see if we are the right company for your
long-term goals.

Safety Assessment and Laboratory
Animals Resources (SALAR) helps advance high quality drug candidates into
development by defining the non–clinical safety and selectivity of lead
compounds. SALAR employees evaluate Lead Op candidates and preclinical toxicity
of drug development candidates, provide mechanistic understanding of
drug-induced toxicity, and assess implications for human safety.  SALAR provides collaborative research in
animal model development, veterinary medical and animal care, and research
facility management. Safety Assessment also responds to regulatory questions in
support of drug registration.

Working with a team of scientists
in the Investigative laboratory Sciences department, the intern will help to
develop in vitro safety models to predict adverse events involving the immune
system.  Multiple pre-clinical species,
including mice and non-human primates, will be examined.  The project will include designing in vitro
models, isolating and culturing immune system cells, assessing results using
state of the art techniques (flow cytometry, ELISA, etc.), and analyzing
results for presentations to team members.
The overall experience will help teach the intern multiple laboratory
and critical thinking skills.  In
addition, emphasis will be placed on how these skills fit into the overall drug
development process.  Finally, interns
are expected to prepare and present a final report on their training and
research experience.
