The co-op assignment will support Merck Manufacturing Division's (MMD) Packaging Commercialization or Packaging Technical Operations departments.  These groups serve as Merck's central packaging Centers of Excellence with global responsibility for packaging related activities.  The position is based in West Point, PA (a suburb of Philadelphia).  It is a full-time paid six month co-op position.  A housing stipend is available as part of this program.


 


As a Packaging Technology Co-op you will be assisting in designing, developing, testing, and improving primary, secondary and tertiary pharmaceutical packaging of drug substance, drug product and finished goods to be safe, compliant, and beneficial to the consumers.


 


The candidate selected will have opportunities to gain experience in a wide variety of areas within pharmaceutical packaging.  Examples include:



Primary and secondary packaging development and testing for solid oral dose, sterile and medical device products
Packaging equipment
Packaging processes and controls
Bulk packaging development and testing
Distribution packaging development and testing
Thermal packaging development and testing
Packaging related documentation and regulations
Customer focus group and use testing
These activities will also provide the co-op with exposure to other departments, cross functional teams, suppliers, etc. through the course of day to day work.  The job function includes:




1-2 larger projects to be completed within the co-op block and smaller tasks throughout
Experience with suppliers, outside vendors, on-site manufacturing, and third party packaging sites, not only to work with but co-ops are encouraged to simply meet and learn from as many of these connections as time allows
Potential travel (PA, NJ, NC, within US and even globally)
Extensive training in Pharmaceutical Packaging; on-going self-paced e-learning, in person training, and on-the-job training through experience
Manager for reporting and evaluation, coach for day-to-day questions, and plenty of project work in supporting the whole packaging team
There will also be an end of co-op presentation to the entire packaging teamQualifications

Qualifications:




Required:



Available for full time employment (40 hours per week) for a period of 6 months in 1st half 2018, 2nd half 2018 or 1st half 2019
Currently pursuing degree in Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
Currently enrolled in an academic program and returning to university following this co-op assignment to complete credit requirements for graduation.
GPA of 3.0 or higher.
 



Preferred:



Strong project management, problem solving, organizational, technical writing and communication skills.
