Merck
& Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States
and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of
prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. The difference
between potential and achievement lies in the spark that fuels innovation and
inventiveness; this is the space where Merck has codified its legacy for
over a century. Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward
momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global
healthcare.

Merck is on a quest for cures and is committed to being the world’s premier,
most research-intensive biopharmaceutical company. Today, we’re doubling down
on this goal. Merck Research Laboratories is a true scientific research
facility of tomorrow, and will take Merck’s leading discovery capabilities and
world-class small molecule and biologics R&D expertise to create
breakthrough science that radically changes the way we approach serious
diseases.

The Future Talent Program
features internships that last 9-12 weeks and will include one or more
projects. These opportunities in our Merck Research Labs (MRL) can provide you
with great development and a chance to see if we are the right company for your
long-term goals.

Safety Assessment and Laboratory
Animals Resources (SALAR) helps advance high quality drug candidates into
development by defining the non–clinical safety and selectivity of lead
compounds. SALAR employees evaluate Lead Op candidates and preclinical toxicity
of drug development candidates, provide mechanistic understanding of
drug-induced toxicity, and assess implications for human safety.  SALAR provides collaborative research in
animal model development, veterinary medical and animal care, and research facility
management. Safety Assessment also responds to regulatory questions in support
of drug registration.

Intern project summary:

The
intern will work on one or more small projects and/or experiments that will
leverage state-of-the-art LC-MS technology for metabolomic application in
toxicology.  The projects will require to
use Thermofisher LC-MS instruments and software Compound Discoverer to process
metabolomic profiling data.  Day-to-day
activities will likely include tasks that require sample preparation (plasma,
urine, tissues), sample analysis using LC-MS platform, data analysis and
biochemical pathway analysis  with a
focus on metabolic changes due to antibiotic dosing in rats.   Good understanding of biochemical pathway
(esp. gut microbiome) and some experience with computer database building
(small molecular metabolite database) will be a plus.
