The Merck Neuroscience team isseeking motivated and technically skilled students majoring in the Biological sciencesor pharmacy.  The student should havestrong interest in neuroscience and learning about CNS drug discovery.  Successful candidates will be able to workindependently, and will be expected to proactively collaborate withcolleagues.  Primary responsibilitiesinclude contributing to the execution of in vitro experiments includingestablishing in vitro cell-based model systems, development of immunoassays andperforming biochemical and immunohistochemical analysis of tissues to supportthe identification and validation of novel targets to treat CNS diseases. Thecandidate will be an active participant in the positive and critical scientificdialogue that supports our mission of target identification and validation.


The responsibilities of the EarlyDiscovery Neuroscience team member include:

  • Design,execute, interpret and report in vitro experiments.
  • Assistin developing, executing, and troubleshooting new cell assays, protocols andimaging methods.
  • Supportcharacterization and validation of antibody activity in cell based and in vivomodels.
  • Communicate data clearly and concisely to teams and stakeholders.
  • Monitor,review and critically interpret published work to guide their research.
  • Collaboratewith members from other functional areas, including medicinal chemistry, invivo and in vitro pharmacology and genetics.



  • Required: Candidates must have completed at least (2) years towards a BS/BA degree in Biological Sciences or related disciplines such as Chemistry, Pharmacy or health related fields, by June 2018
  • Candidates must be returning to school in the Fall of 2018.
  • RequiredExperience:

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for 9-12 weeks beginning in May or June of 2018
  • Candidates must have strong desire to develop knowledge of neuroscience drug discovery.
  • Candidates must have some experience with basic lab procedures: pipetting, solution preparation, plate assays
  • Candidates must have interest in conducting experiments to determine efficacy of test compounds, establish dose-response and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships, investigate biomarker responses and target engagement or modulation in vivo.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated ability to perform accurate data analysis
  • Candidates must have experience with basic mammalian cell culture, i.e., transfections, primary neurons
  • PreferredExperience:

  • Previous neuroscience coursework
  • Experience with rodent behavior, animal handing, and dousing procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation of lab reports and presentations
  • Strong attention to detail.
