How will you invent the future?

As a Director, Interaction Design and Visualization at Merck’s Austin IT HUB, you will be part of inventing tomorrow. Our Innovative centers are where great people come together and deliver solutions that save and improve lives.

We are all part of a transformation in digital health, a time where data is flowing in from all areas of the healthcare landscape. Combined and analyzed in novel and creative ways, this data has the promise to reshape healthcare to drive new insights and outcomes. At Merck, we are forming a computer science group that will partner with scientists and business leaders to transform how they work using technology; from the way they care, to the way they cure.

Our technology is being built from the ground up to give scientists and physicians the ability to use their expertise, their insights, and their creativity to discover compelling new answers—and to ask new questions that will lead to meaningful advances in healthcare and life science. We are looking for people with vision, technical prowess, and intuitive practicality to lead, shape, and deliver our powerful data-driven services.

It is an ideal position for leaders in computer science who are purposeful and want to build technology for the scientific and healthcare communities that make positive impacts on the lives of people around the world.

We are seeking a director, Interaction Design and Visualization to grow and lead a new team that will transform how scientists and medical professionals utilize information. This position will be both a principle contributor and leader of a new group. The director will:

  • Create a team that delivers intuitive and scalable visualization to enable scientists and medical professionals to readily explore data in novel ways.

  • Explore and understand uses and interactions among data and user activities.

  • Work with research teams in the computer sciences organization and users to find compelling designs to express and extend data visualizations.

  • Seek breakthroughs in capabilities and design by recognizing unstated needs.

  • Capture and protect invention and intellectual property.

The director must understand the challenges and opportunities in translating complex problems into simple, scalable, interactive user interfaces. An interest in the possibilities of scalable structures and frameworks, and new approaches to data protection is of great value. A willingness to challenge assumptions and constraints of existing solutions and conventional wisdom is highly desirable. Candidates need to have an intuition for finding new approaches that attract users and raise their expectations for the capabilities and services that they can apply to their work.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree or higher in Computer Science or equivalent.

Required:

  • Committed to the application of computer science principles to design, development, feedback, and adaption of algorithms and data into usable and intuitive user interfaces

  • Prior experience in developing and leading complex data representations and interaction models.

  • Experience in managing and growing a creative, technical team developing products and services.

  • Familiarity with challenges and opportunities of running, adapting and improving real life applications and services.

  • Successful delivery of production systems that have been scaled and broadly consumed.

  • Ability to attract top technical talent.

  • Collaborative working style to engage and motivate teams, users and partners.

Preferred

  • Advanced degree desirable

Your role at Merck is integral to helping the world meet new breakthroughs that affect generations to come, and we’re counting on your skills and inventiveness to help make meaningful contributions to global medical advancement. At Merck, we’re inventing for life.
