Position Summary


The APC Microbiome Institute (APC) was formed in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland and in conjunction with key industry partners. It represents a seamless collaboration between UCC, Teagasc, Moorepark and CIT. It is widely recognised that our microbiome (community of bacteria/viruses and fungi that live in and on our bodies) plays an important role in human health and has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Over the last decade the APC has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research. The APC has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 1700 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. The APC comprises over 300 individuals, from the scientific PI's (the APC Faculty) funded by the partner Institutions, the management team, and a dedicated group of research scientists, research assistants and postgraduate's students.


We are recruiting a Research Assistant to support an industry-funded research project focused on the role of the microbiome in early life in shaping brain development, physiology and behaviour. The successful candidate will be part of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis team led by Prof. John Cryan and Prof. Ted Dinan in the APC Microbiome Institute, which addresses the communication between the brain and the gut, and how it can be influenced by gastrointestinal microbiota. We use state of the art neurobiological techniques to relate changes in behavioural phenotype, as a consequence of gastrointestinal microbiota intervention strategies, with changes in immune, stress, neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter systems (see Cryan and Dinan, Nat Rev Neuro 2012; Borre et al., Trends Mol Med 2014).


Essential Qualifications/Experience:


  • BSc or MSc in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology; Biopsychology)

  • Up to 4 years' experience post degree qualification

  • Significant experience with behavioural neuroscience techniques in rodents

  • Experience with HPLC, cell culture, gut physiology, ELISA, PCR and molecular analyses would be an advantage

Post duration: 12 months


Salary: 21,459-€33,930 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)
