Natural polyphenols and synthetic analogues for pharmaceutical industry

On the basis of the present interest of Pharmaceutical Industry towards natural compounds, we have selected for this project plants rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols have been recently recognized as a new class of -glucosidase inhibitors, so extracts from these plants will be evaluated for the inhibition of -glucosidase/-amylase enzymes, involved in glucose absorption. On the basis of a screening of the above cited plants, an assay-guided fractionation of the most promising extracts will afford natural inhibitors of these enzymes, as potential antidiabetic lead compounds. In addition, we'll carry out the synthesis of bioinspired polyphenols with potential activity on different biological targets: -glucosidase/-amylase, proteasome, nuclear farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and others. In particular we'll try to obtain new derivatives of resveratrol and analogues, magnolol or honokiol, avenantramide, benzoxanthene lignans
