PhD Studentship - 2 positions
APC Microbiome Institute and School of Microbiology, University College Cork
Cork City, Ireland
Applications are invited for two postgraduate studentship positions leading to a PhD in (Molecular (Micro)biology) in the School of Microbiology and the APC Microbiome Institute http://www.ucc.ie/research/apc/content/, University College Cork.
PhD Position 1 (Ref No. BacTransA5) - BacTrans - Natural DNA transfer systems for bacterial starter cultures (Lactococcus lactis)
PhD Position 2 (Ref No. BacTransA6) - BacTrans - Natural DNA transfer systems for bacterial starter cultures (Streptococcus thermophilus)
Description: BacTrans is an industry-partnered project that aims to identify and exploit natural DNA transfer systems including, but not limited to, conjugation and phage-mediated transduction. The objective of this study is to develop novel and technologically robust strains of Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus, particularly with respect to phage-resistance, for commercial use as so-called starter cultures in the dairy and fermented (functional) food industries. The project will involve bioinformatic analysis of bacterial genomes for the presence of potentially active systems followed by functional characterisation of the identified systems. Furthermore, it is intended to to assess the technological appropriateness of the developed strains in small scale trials.
