Organizational Unit Overview

The East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine invites applications for the Division Director of Basic Sciences, Department of Foundational Sciences. The ECU SoDM curriculum involves a series of integrated foundational biological science courses that present the study of human systems across traditional disciplines; both normal and abnormal functions are studied as part of systems.

The Division Director of Basic Sciences will: 1) coordinate teaching of the basic science faculty and teach in team-taught, systems-oriented human science courses using lecture, small group, and laboratory formats; 2) direct and mentor ECU SoDM basic sciences faculty in their teaching and research; and 3) work with faculty and staff in the School of Dental Medicine, the Brody School of Medicine, and other ECU schools, colleges, and programs to accomplish the basic educational mission of the SoDM. This is a full-time, tenure track or fixed term faculty position of Associate Professor or higher. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. The position will report to the Chair, Department of Foundational Sciences.

Job Duties

Specific duties include:

  • Coordination of the courses and competencies related to the basic sciences taught in the SoDM curriculum. This involves working with faculty, students and staff to implement the educational mission of the school.
  • Liaison with BSOMand other ECU faculty in coordinating scheduling and tracking of the delivery of basic science faculty teaching.
  • Coordination and active participation in the editing of content involved in the delivery of instruction. This includes manuals, reference materials, and presentation media.
  • Serving as the course director for Foundational Biological Sciences and participation in student progress evaluation and remediation for that course and other related courses.
  • Coordination and active participation in the evaluation of student outcomes. This includes exams and problem and case-based learning.
  • Evaluation of basic science faculty teaching, including informal and formal performance evaluations and improvements related to the curriculum and its delivery.
  • Active participation in the student evaluation of teaching and their basic science instruction.
  • Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics in curriculum development, implementation, and assessment with respect to the specific topics in basic science as related to health care in general, and dentistry in particular.
  • Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics personnel to optimize the use of technology to support the department's teaching programs.
  • Serving as member of the Curriculum Committee, Student Progress Committee and other committees as related to curriculum management, learning outcomes, and other areas related to the educational mission.
  • Preparation of accreditation and other program documentation and reports, as needed.
  • Conducting basic, translational and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
  • Seeking to serve on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies and within the school and university.
  • Attending meetings and representing the school in internal and external venues as requested by the Chair of Foundational Sciences.
  • Supervising and mentoring graduate and professional students and junior faculty in research.
  • Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of Foundational Sciences or the dental school dean.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DMD, DDS, and/or MD)
  • Formal training in a scientific discipline related to the human system (e.g., gross anatomy, immunology, genetics, neuroscience, embryology, histology, physiology with additional evidence of ability to teach at a professional school level)
  • Expertise in the human system beyond the orofacial region
  • Experience teaching and coordinating basic science courses in a medical or dental school
  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Currently holds the academic rank of associate professor or higher

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Be able to obtain NC professional license if applicable.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Expertise with computer-based and interactive instruction techniques.
  • Research experience.
  • Mentoring experience.
  • Commitment to and evidence of building teams in planning and to identify and resolve problems.
