Join an Expanding Academic Clinical and Laboratory Genetics Program

The Division of Clinical Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health System is seeking applicants for a full time Genetic Counselor II with a specialization in Laboratory Genetic Counseling.  Join a team of laboratory directors, medical geneticists, and genetic counselors, in a position that combines both laboratory and clinical expertise. This is a startup position that will involve collaboration with the bioinformatics team, participation in the selection of testing panels, creation of reporting formats and development of testing and VUS protocols.

The selected individual will use their clinical expertise to interpret and communicate the results of genomic testing.  This position will also involve customer service to physicians, genetic counselors, and other clients within and external to the VCHUS.  Additionally, the Genetic Counselor II will see patients one half day a week in the VCU Health System's outpatient genetics clinics. Participation in a variety of multidisciplinary clinics is also available. This individual will also participate in the MS in Genetic Counseling Program as a clinical supervisor and possible rotation director.

The Genetic Counselor II position is eligible for adjunct faculty status.  In addition to clinical and laboratory responsibilities, the applicant is expected to participate in clinical supervision of students and is encouraged to teach in the VCU Genetic Counseling training program.  This individual will be involved in establishing a laboratory genetic counseling rotation for the MS in Genetic Counseling Program in the VCU School of Medicine.

Minimum Requirements include:

  • Masters of Science in Genetic Counseling from an accredited Genetic Counseling program. 
  • Board Certification with American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). 
  • Must knowledge of medical genetics, the ability to accurately evaluate and interpret scientific literature, excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Experience with molecular genetic techniques and counseling in a laboratory environment is preferred but not required.
