In an AMR era, rapid diagnostics and alternatives to antibiotics to treat infectious diseases are urgently needed. Pathogenic microorganisms present a myriad of species-specific carbohydrate structures on their cell surfaces, which provide novel opportunities for detection and eradication. This project will explore the development of chemical and structural methods to produce and characterise cell surfaces carbohydrates found bacteria that are associated with diseases of farmed animals and that are also of concern from a bioterrorism perspective. The carbohydrates concerned will be further developed as probes to understand the biosynthesis of cell surface carbohydrates and as the basis of new diagnostics and vaccines.


The project will involve extensive engagement with the industrial partner, Iceni Diagnostics, which is co-located on the Norwich Research Park with the John Innes Centre. Previous experience in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry would be a distinct advantage, but full training will be provided.


This Industrial CASE project has been shortlisted for funding by the Norwich Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NRPDTP). Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed as part of the studentship competition on either the 9th, 10th or 11th January 2018.

Funding notes


Full Studentships cover a stipend (RCUK rate: £14,553pa - 2017/8), research costs and tuition fees at UK/EU rate, and are available to UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements.


Students from EU countries who do not meet the UK residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award. Students in receipt of a fees-only award will be eligible for a maintenance stipend awarded by the NRPDTP Bioscience Doctoral Scholarships, which when combined will equal a full studentship.
