The Institute for Systems Biology invites applications for a Washington Research Foundation Innovation faculty position at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. A Professor level appointment would be considered for exceptional candidates. ISB has created this position, in part, to increase our computational capacity to develop novel algorithms and approaches to analyze the tremendous amount of data that will be generated by ISB’s 100K Wellness Project, to take advantage of the access to electronic medical records provided by ISB’s affiliation with Providence St. Joseph Health, and to engage with the University of Washington eScience Institute. The candidate will be expected to lead an independent and world-class research effort, including leveraging these unique data resources and partnerships.

The 100K Wellness Project is led by ISB’s President Lee Hood, MD, PhD and by Associate Director Nathan Price, PhD. Hood and Price have pioneered systems approaches to biology and medicine, and Hood has been the leading voice globally for P4 (predictive, preventative, personalized and participatory) medicine. The 100K Wellness Project will gather a large amount of longitudinal, multidimensional omic and physiological data from 100,000 people, including genomes, proteomes, metabolomes, microbiomes, clinical labs, wearable devices and so forth. These data will enable data mining to understand the early signs of the major human diseases and to identify new understanding of the manifestations of genetic risk in the body. Examples of applications of these data include, but are not limited to:

  • Define quantitative metrics for wellness that will provide this emerging discipline with deep scientific underpinnings
  • Enable the data for each individual to be integrated and modeled to identify actionable recommendations that will allow individuals to optimize their wellness and/or avoid or ameliorate disease
  • Identify early wellness to disease transitions for all major diseases
  • Build and automate pipelines for machine learning and data-driven discovery expanding base of incoming data
  • Design follow-up experimental and/or clinical studies in concert with collaborators to validate data-driven findings

Providence St. Joseph Health is a not-for-profit health system that serves 5 million unique patients in seven states and has an integrated electronic medical records system. ISB affiliated with Providence St. Joseph Health in April 2016 with the goal of bringing personalized medicine to every patient. Lee Hood now serves as Chief Science Officer for Providence a role he will continue when Jim Heath, PhD assumes the Presidency of ISB in January 2018.

The University of Washington eScience Institute has broad expertise in data-intensive discovery. The Institute consists of individuals with backgrounds in physics, astronomy, bioengineering, bioinformatics, data management techniques, and computer science. Ed Lazowksa, PhD, is the founding director of the Institute and is deeply committed to the success of the 100K Wellness Project.

We seek a candidate with a PhD in computer science, biostatistics or related areas, with research applications in big biological data, bioinformatics, and/or computational biology to become a faculty member and build an exceptional research group, including leveraging data from 100K Wellness Project. The candidate must have a genuine passion for P4 medicine.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in a subset of the following areas: data science, machine learning, data mining, data-intensive computing, large-scale database architecture, computational statistics, network analysis, time-series analysis, network science, scalable computing, and statistics directed to modeling, inference and prediction in big data contexts. The ideal candidate’s publications will reflect their ability to build new approaches to data-intensive, proactive P4 medicine. The candidate will have demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with outside researchers and clinical partners. Candidates applying for an Associate Professor level will have experience in directing an independent research program and a strong record in securing external grants and funding to support their program.

Joint appointment at the eScience Institute. Many of ISB’s faculty have affiliate faculty appointments at the University of Washington. For this position, we anticipate that the selected candidate will have at a minimum an affiliate appointment at the eScience Institute and will be expected to be engaged with and utilize the expertise of the Institute.

About ISB

The Institute for Systems Biology is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) biomedical research organization based in Seattle, Washington. It was founded in 2000 by systems biologist Lee Hood, MD, PhD, immunologist Alan Aderem, PhD, and protein chemist Ruedi Aebersold, PhD. ISB was established on the belief that the conventional models for exploring and funding breakthrough science have not caught up with the real potential of what is possible today. ISB serves as the ultimate environment where scientific collaboration stretches across disciplines, where our researchers have the intellectual freedom to challenge the status quo, and where grand visions for breakthroughs in human health inspire a collective drive to achieve the seemingly impossible. Our core values ensure that we always keep our focus on the big ideas that eventually will have the biggest impact on human health.

About Providence St. Joseph Health

Providence St. Joseph Health is a not-for-profit health system that includes 50 hospitals, over 800 clinics, and 100,000 employees across seven states. The system services 5 million unique patients yearly and operates in seven western states.

About eScience Institute

The University of Washington’s eScience Institute’s mission is to advance the forefront of research both in modern data science techniques and technologies, and in the fields that depend upon them. The Institute provides an umbrella organization for Big Data activities at the University and beyond.
