The research aims to figures out all the evidence attesting the activity of the famous German scholar Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903) in Terra di Lavoro (and Campania), the relationships he established with the most influential figures of the local elite and culture, his interest and judgment on relevant initiatives carried out to preserve the archeological, historical and artistic heritage (e.g. the foundation of the Museo Campano in Capua and the creation of the Commissione Conservatrice dei Monumenti ed Oggetti di Antichità e Belle Arti di Terra di Lavoro). The research will focus on collections of books and manuscripts kept in libraries and archives of the Province of Caserta and, more in general, of Campania and, specially, on the correspondence presenved in the libraries of Germanic area.
