The research project is in line with the growing interest in the studies for altarpieces, for their morphological and structural features. The Tuscan production of the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century has been selected, for its strong experimental nature, as a model observatory for analysing the form and structure of these altarpieces. By means of a large-scale comparative analysis, this research aims at examining areas which have been more neglected by scholars, in order to highlight similarities and differences with the structural and morphological features of Late Gothic Florentine and Sienese polyptychs. The project aims at developing a protocol for organizing the historical and material data that will be collected. The research will include the creation of a computer database and of virtual reconstructions that show the altarpieces in their original sacred space, in order to better understand the relationship between altarpieces and the public.
