At Merck’s manufacturing campus in Elkton, Virginia, we currently have an Associate Specialist, Engineering position within the Technical Services team. The manufacturing facility is located in the Shenandoah Valley along the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Mountains – just a short distance from the University of Virginia and James Madison University. 

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply their enthusiasm and technical skills in a customer-centric setting, to support the operation of pharmaceutical / biopharmaceutical / vaccine product manufacturing facilities, generate creative solutions for issues encountered in the field and pro-actively generate and implement continuous improvement ideas.

Assignments and duties will include:

- Characterization and identification of synthetic elastomers, organic and inorganic materials, multi-component materials and equipment, metal alloys and other using a wide variety of analytical instrumentation

- Identifying root cause for equipment, material of construction or product failures using a materials characterization approach

- Participate and contribute expertise for technical investigations and analyses, recommending corrective actions, developing creative solutions for prevention of recurrence and seeing them through to successful, sustainable implementation

- Hands-on, on-location analysis in biologic, chemical and sterile production floor environments using a variety of portable analytical tools

- Emergency troubleshooting activities on short notice

- Achieve Safety, Quality, and Environmental compliance excellence in all assignments

- Learning new processes and procedures, proactively improving existing ones

- Writing, reviewing, improving documentation for technical and regulatory compliance excellence

- Teaching, coaching, mentoring, and learning from team members

Qualifications

Education:

- B.S. degree in chemistry, materials science, or related life science or engineering discipline, 0-2 years of relevant industrial or academic experience

Required:

- Proficiency in FTIR, RAMAN, ED-XRF spectroscopic techniques

- Proficiency in SEM-EDX and visual microscopy techniques

- Understanding of spectroscopic and composition differences between materials of construction

- Excellent technical, organizational, interpersonal, collaborative, and verbal/written communication skills are required

- Good problem solving skills and a hands-on approach to problem solving, with a bias toward going to see problems for oneself in the field

Preferred:

- Experience in separation and analysis via HPLC

- Experience troubleshooting and modifying analytical equipment for specific , non-standard analyses

- Interest in process equipment diagnostics and troubleshooting
