The aim of the present research is the optimization of some operation units used in drinking water treatment plants: established advanced oxidation processes to remove emerging contaminants, pre-oxidation to minimize precursors in disinfection by-products formation, biological activated carbon to remove micropollutants and control the biological stability of produced water. Hence, experiments at laboratory and pilot scale will be carried out to collect case-specific data, as well as computational fluid dynamic techniques will be adopted for reactor analysis, in order to perform a process analysis in which removal rates are assessed as a function of operating parameters and - if needed - process costs.
