Synthesis of luminescent silicon nanocrystals for bioimaging
The research project will be focused on the synthesis and functionalization of silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) as luminescent probes for bioimaging. This research activity is aimed at obtaining water dispersible SiNCs to be tested in bioimaging by time-gated detection, which enables a higher resolution of the acquired image.
The experimental work will be mainly focused on the synthesis of SiNCs and their functionalization by a variety of methods spanning from radical initiated hydrosilylation reaction to photochemical routes. The researcher will have the task of optimizing the functionalization procedure of water soluble SiNCs with dyes absorbing in the visible spectral region, in particular in the red . This will require a constant literature search of the developments in the field, as well as knowledge of the usual organic and inorganic synthetic techniques, particularly silicon chemistry, and characterization of the SiNCs.
