Assistant Professor - Pathology
Basic Function: Serves as a tenure-track full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty member in the Department of Pathology or other Basic Science Department. The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for lecture and small group instruction; will be expected to develop an extramurally funded program of clinical or basic science research; and, serve the university on appointed and elected committees. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of other faculty members including the specific Course and Module Directors and the Chair of the Department for accomplishing the teaching mission. Additional instructional responsibilities may be assigned.
- Providing instruction to students per lecture schedule including acting as facilitator for the self-study programs, small group instruction and problem-based learning as coordinated and assigned by the Course and Module Directors and Department Chair.
- Grading of student small group assignments and maintaining a student grade book or spreadsheet. Reporting grades in a timely manner to the Course or Module Director or Department Chair.
- Attendance to department meetings and assisting in all aspects of the departmental mission.
- Any other duties attendant to meeting objectives of the educational program of the department.
- Attendance to didactic lectures in departmental courses to familiarize with the material presented.
- Providing tutorial assistance to students that are struggling with the lecture or small group material.
- Proctoring exams as assigned and previously agreed to.
- May propose and offer additional courses as administratively approved.
- Establishing a program of clinical or basic science research in the area chosen by the candidate and as appropriately approved, coordinated and overseen with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and attendant to all related institutional policies. This program will include application for extramural funding, publication and other scholarly activity, and mentoring students’ research projects.
- Service to the university through active participation in appointed or elected committees and effective committee leadership.
- Performs additional duties as required and coordinated with their Department Chair.
- Department Chair is supervisor and evaluator but the successful candidate will work closely with the various Course and Module Directors and Program Directors and other faculty. These individuals may also provide input into the evaluation and assessment of the successful candidate’s performance.
- Maintaining professional and positive relationships with students is a must.
- Will have continuous contact with the department Administrative Assistant on matters of time and attendance, clerical, and secretarial services as well as ordering of supplies and laboratory budget. These relationships are expected to be professional and courteous.
- Maintains contact with faculty personnel within the Pathology Department and other departments and programs when deemed necessary. These relationships are expected to be professional and courteous.
- May have limited contact with service representatives concerning equipment maintenance and with sales representatives concerning supplies and equipment. These relationships are expected to be professional and courteous.
Education and Experience Requirement:
- Graduation from a recognized/accredited college or university with a doctoral degree in Pathology other related biological sciences. This may be a Ph.D., D.O., M.D., O.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., D.Sc. or a similar qualifying degree.
- Course requirements – courses in General, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology are expected but additional courses in Veterinary, Forensic, Molecular and other areas of Pathology will be considered. Those with research and other significant training in Pathology related fields will also be considered.
- The applicant must have demonstrated at least 2 years in a post-doctoral fellowship or equivalent post-doctoral training or experience (e.g. Pathology residency).
- Must be willing to occasionally work early hours for proctoring exams - arriving as early as 6:30 a.m. - and late hours for afternoon small groups – as late as 6:30 p.m.
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills are a must.
- Must exhibit independent creative and analytical thinking and reasoning skills.
- Must be able to lecture for 2-3 hours continuously with intermittent 10 minute breaks.
- Must exhibit an ability to work creatively and cooperatively to foster a collegial environment to accomplish all aspects of the department and university’s mission.
