The Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) is a non-profit research institution which carries out long-term investigations in the field of materials and coastal research, making a substantial contribution in resolving the major and pressing issues facing society, science and the economy. The centre employs approximately 1000 people at three locations (Geesthacht, Hamburg and Teltow) and currently has a total annual budget of approximately EUR 120 million including third-party funds. It is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres.
With effect from 1st July 2019, the following position will be vacant:
Together with the Administrative Director, the Scientific-Technical Director acts as the head of the centre. Their primary task is the strategic-programmatic development of the HZG's research profile. The Scientific-Technical Director represents the centre and its research externally, is familiar with the German and international scientific system and is business orientated. He/She is responsible for working with national and international strategic partners (e.g. universities, other non-university research institutions and industry).
It is expected that the successful candidate will have high level scientific qualifications (usually postdoctoral qualifications) and an excellent research profile in one of the two HZG focus areas. He or she will also have extensive experience in the management of major scientific institutions nationally and internationally. The candidate must have the ability to incorporate and advance new developments and trends in the research landscape that are relevant to the HZG, such as digitalisation, system analysis and application orientation. A willingness to cooperate internationally, to work on committees and to represent science in politics and society is essential, as is an excellent command of both written and spoken German and English.
The Scientific-Technical Director should have outstanding scientific leadership and decision-making skills. He/She should also be keen to advance contacts externally and additionally have the ability to communicate with and motivate employees. The appointment is for a period of five years. A reappointment is possible and in principle envisaged.
