How will you invent the future?

As a Director, Reliability Engineering and Resiliency at Merck’s Austin IT HUB, you will be part of inventing tomorrow. Our Innovative centers are where great people come together and deliver solutions that save and improve lives.

We are all part of a transformation in digital health, a time where data is flowing in from all areas of the healthcare landscape. Combined and analyzed in novel and creative ways, this data has the promise to reshape healthcare to drive new insights and outcomes. At Merck, we are forming a computer science group that will partner with scientists and business leaders to transform how they work using technology; from the way they care, to the way they cure.

Our technology is being built from the ground up to give scientists and physicians the ability to use their expertise, their insights, and their creativity to discover compelling new answers—and to ask new questions that will lead to meaningful advances in healthcare and life science. We are looking for people with vision, technical prowess, and intuitive practicality to lead, shape, and deliver our powerful data-driven services.

It is an ideal position for leaders in computer science who are purposeful and want to build technology for the scientific and healthcare communities that make positive impacts on the lives of people around the world.

We are seeking a director, Reliability Engineering and Resiliency, to grow and lead a new team that will transform how a set of new software services will be improved and sustained for scientists and medical professionals. This position will be both a principle contributor and leader of a new group.

The director will:

Create a team that continuously improves performance, availability, security and operational efficiency of the services and technologies developed by Merck’s Computer Science organization.

Discover and apply new ways to automate the routine and detect problems in systems before they interfere with operations.

Operate large-scale, commercial-quality services that bring new data approaches, capabilities, and visualizations to scientists and practitioners.

Explore and understand uses and interactions among data and services.

Explore and apply new ways to measure system health, performance, and reliability.

Capture and protect invention and intellectual property.

The director must understand the challenges and opportunities in translating complex problems into simple, scalable, interactive services and be able to bring performance, scale, and reliability to these new services while recognizing and preserving the vision of the functions.

A familiarity with the possibilities and trade-offs of new approaches to scalable structures, frameworks, and data protection are of great value.

A willingness to challenge assumptions and constraints of sustainment models and conventional wisdom is highly desirable.

Candidates need to have an intuition for finding new approaches that make systems easier to operate, scale, protect, and adapt.

Bachelors Degree or equivalent degree in Computer Science

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty with thoughtful attention to detail and a strong focus on broader intent and vision.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

Committed to the application of computer science principles to improve systems in use through automation, performance analysis, tuning, and adaption.

Prior experience in leading complex, distributed systems that are developed, debugged, and improved continuously.

Successful delivery of real-life applications and services that have been scaled and broadly consumed.

Experience in managing and growing a creative, technical team that is passionate about finding ways to make systems work better.

Ability to attract top technical talent.

Collaborative working style to engage and motivate teams, users and partners.

Interest in cyber defense, high availability systems, and global health solutions.

Experience in the development, discovery, and application of technology to life science needs.

Visualization of systems operations, performance, and usage that reveals issues and opportunities for improvement of applications and services.

Advanced degree highly desirable.

Your role at Merck is integral to helping the world meet new breakthroughs that affect generations to come, and we’re counting on your skills and inventiveness to help make meaningful contributions to global medical advancement. At Merck, we’re inventing for life.
