James Madison University seeks a leader for a growing, multifaceted academic unit with degrees emphasizing innovation and problem solving that are not constrained by disciplinary boundaries. The Integrated Science and Technology department contains several unique degree-granting programs: BS and MS in Integrated Science and Technology, BS and BA in Geographic Science, and BS in Intelligence Analysis. We produce graduates who are flexible critical thinkers that can solve real-world problems. Our 50 faculty members have a broad range of expertise as demonstrated by the diverse scholarship and terminal degrees in 39 different fields. The department is transitioning to become a school and the Department Head will become the Director of the School of Integrated Sciences.
The ideal candidate will be able to understand, embrace, and promote the culture that brings these programs together. In addition to representing the Department within the university, to parents and students, and to business and government entities, the successful candidate will help faculty define, articulate, and implement a vision that garners national attention. Candidates should demonstrate leadership skills and experience, especially in situations requiring a collaborative leadership style. Experience, both inside and outside of academia, and working with varied business, industry, and government partners is strongly desired. The successful candidate will demonstrate prior administrative and/or management experience, and the ability to cultivate relationships within the university and with external partners. Because of the unique nature of the Department, the position requires a history of rigorous and creative teaching and scholarship. A doctoral degree is required.
The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Integrated Science and Engineering. The position is a 12-month administrative faculty appointment (with the possibility of tenure upon initial appointment given appropriate credentials).
