Depending on various service-specific requirements (as latency and bandwidth), virtual network functions (VNF) can be either centralized in few datacenters in the core network or they can be distributed closer to network edge. Our objective is to develope software tools for optimized VNF placement and evaluate the impact of service requirements on VNF distribution in next generation metro networks. As placement of functions (not only bandwidth assignment) can be dynamically managed through calendaring, suitable dynamic-placement control algorithms shall be devised to evaluate the benefits of function. Reliability aspects of the problem will also be investigated.
