Accountable for worldwide process safety management (PSM) audit, PSM field execution verification and program implementation support. This role will be a working manager role and includes managing staff (both US and ExUS) and budget to support on-going site PSM program reviews and program implementation.

Directs corporate process safety field execution professionals. Influences Regional GSE leadership, Business Leaders and site EHS professionals to drive prioritization of regulatory compliance, continuous performance improvement, and integration of process safety performance objectives into standard work processes. Develops strategies to achieve these goals in alignment with Global Safety and Environment and Merck business goals, standards and values.

NOTE: Estimated travel for this position is 35%


Minimum Education Requirement:

- B.S. chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or related engineering field or a BS in Chemistry

Required Experience and Skills:

- 15 years of progressive EHS experience in pharmaceutical, biochemical, chemical, petrochemical or process related industry with direct responsibility for process safety program audit, field verification and program implementation support.

- Proven people and budget management experience.

- Detailed working knowledge of process safety management compliance. Including conduct of HAZOPs/PHAs, mechanical integrity (preventive maintenance, testing and inspection), operating procedures, emergency response, facility siting, management of change, process/equipment design, safety interlock strategies, contractor management, application of Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP), and As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP)

- Direct experience in managing process safety at a site, regional or global level.

- Proficiency in the use of all Microsoft based desktop software programs.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

- Proven knowledge in development and management of Process Safety and High Risk Work Programs in a process-related industry.

- Working knowledge of safety codes and standards (OSHA, ANSI, ISO, NFPA, IBC, UBC, UFC) and industry consensus standards (FM Global and XLGaps Guidelines).

- Working knowledge Emergency Response

- Proficient in written and oral communication, project management, people development

- Proficient in identification of PSM program deficiencies and application, implementation of programs, tools and training to fix identified gaps.

- Secondary language skills

- Certification or registration as a Professional Engineer or Certified Safety Professional.
